The House Standard: How We Choose Materials (And What We Refuse to Use)

Clean mattress materials should be specific enough to verify. At House of Haven, that means knowing what each component does, using recognized standards where they apply, and refusing to turn words like natural or non-toxic into vague health promises. CertiPUR-US®, for example, tests qualifying polyurethane foam for content, emissions and durability, including VOC emissions below 0.5 ppm.

What do clean mattress materials actually mean?

First, what they do not mean.

“Clean” is not a regulated mattress category.

There is no government-issued Clean Mattress seal.

And a mattress does not become clean because its product page is beige, includes a photograph of eucalyptus leaves and uses the word natural twelve times.

At House of Haven, clean mattress materials is our shorthand for something much less theatrical:

Can we identify the material?

Can we explain why it is there?

Is there a credible standard or test when one is relevant?

Are we being precise about what that standard actually covers?

Could we remove the material without making the mattress worse?

That last question matters.

The mattress industry has become very good at adding ingredients.

Copper.

Gel.

Graphite.

Charcoal.

Silver.

Plant oils.

Cooling yarns.

Foam trademarks.

Another layer can make a specification sheet sound more advanced.

It does not necessarily make the mattress better.

House of Haven's existing material philosophy is deliberately more restrained: materials should earn their place through comfort behaviour, structure, durability or a practical safety function rather than simply making the ingredient list longer.

That creates what we call The House Standard:

We do not choose a material because it sounds clean. We choose it because we can explain its job.


What does CertiPUR-US certified foam really tell you?

Quite a bit.

But less than some mattress advertising implies.

CertiPUR-US® certifies flexible polyurethane foam.

The program says certified foam has been independently analyzed for content, emissions and durability. Its current criteria include foam made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, and certain regulated phthalates, while also requiring low VOC emissions below 0.5 ppm and screening for specified chemicals of concern.

That is useful information.

It gives shoppers something measurable.

CertiPUR-US is unusually explicit on that scope: the organization says it certifies only flexible polyurethane foam, and latex foam falls outside its certification program.

That distinction matters inside a hybrid mattress.

A Haven mattress may contain:

Talalay latex;

polyurethane-based comfort or transition foam;

steel coils;

fabric;

quilting;

and other construction components.

The CertiPUR-US® claim belongs specifically to the qualifying polyurethane foam.

It should not be stretched across everything else.

We think that narrower statement is actually stronger.

A certification becomes more credible when you stop asking it to certify things it never tested.


Why don't we call a Haven mattress “non-toxic”?

Because non-toxic mattress Canada is an understandable search.

It is not a particularly precise product specification.

What toxin?

At what concentration?

In which component?

Under what test?

What exposure route?

Compared with what threshold?

Once you begin asking those questions, non-toxic becomes much less useful than specific material information.

The Competition Bureau's current guidance requires Canadian marketing claims to avoid false or materially misleading representations, and performance claims need proper testing before they are made.

That is one reason we prefer language such as:

CertiPUR-US® certified polyurethane foam

rather than:

totally toxin-free foam.

Or:

fiberglass-free construction

rather than:

nothing harmful inside.

Or:

vented Talalay latex

rather than:

naturally healthy foam.

Specific language creates something the shopper can investigate.

Broad wellness language mostly creates a feeling.

“Chemical-free” has the same problem

Everything around us is chemistry.

Natural latex is chemistry.

Steel is chemistry.

Water is chemistry.

A mattress also has to satisfy real construction and safety requirements.

Mattresses manufactured, imported, advertised or sold in Canada are subject to federal mattress flammability requirements under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act framework.

So our goal is not a mattress that somehow exists outside chemistry.

It is a mattress built with deliberate, transparent material choices.

That is a much more useful standard.


What materials earn a place inside a Haven mattress?

We start with the job.

Then we choose the material.

Not the other way around.

Talalay latex: responsive comfort

We use Talalay latex where we want cushioning with a more buoyant response and physical ventilation.

It compresses when loaded and recovers readily as the sleeper moves.

The visible pin-core structure also creates physical airflow paths through the comfort material.

We do not use latex simply so we can place the word natural prominently on a page.

It has to change the mattress in a way worth feeling.

CertiPUR-US® polyurethane foam: controlled transition

Foam can be extremely useful.

It can provide transition.

Pressure distribution.

Structural stability.

Edge architecture.

And specific comfort characteristics.

The relevant question is not:

“Does this mattress contain foam?”

It is:

“Which foam, what is it doing and what standard applies?”

For Haven's qualifying polyurethane foam, that standard is CertiPUR-US®. The certification provides defined content, emissions and durability criteria rather than a broad wellness promise.

Pocket coils and microcoils: response without ingredient theatre

Steel is not exotic.

That is one reason we like it.

A pocket coil does not need a botanical story.

Its job is mechanical.

Full-height coils can provide the deeper architecture designed to support the sleeper.

Smaller microcoils can create more localized response closer to the comfort surface.

They also leave physical open space inside a hybrid mattress.

We choose springs for what springs are good at.

Bamboo-derived textiles: surface comfort, not mythology

Bamboo is another good example of why precision matters.

A bamboo-derived mattress textile can be soft and useful at the surface.

But a processed bamboo textile should not inherit every environmental or antimicrobial claim associated with the living bamboo plant.

In Canada, the Competition Bureau specifically distinguishes chemically processed rayon or viscose made from bamboo from mechanically processed bamboo fibre.

So our material rule remains the same:

Describe what the finished material actually is.

Then describe what it actually does.

Copper: one job

Copper is thermally conductive.

That gives it a rational role inside temperature-management materials.

We do not need to turn that into a circulation claim, recovery claim or health claim.

Conductivity is enough.

A material does not need five stories if one good one is true.


What materials and claims do we refuse to use?

This is where The House Standard becomes easier to understand.

Some things do not make the cut because of the actual material.

Others do not make the cut because of the story required to sell it.

1. Fiberglass as the hidden fire-barrier story

Haven has publicly stated that its mattresses are built without fiberglass.

That is a straightforward standard for us.

Mattress fire safety is not optional.

But meeting a safety requirement should not create a second anxiety about what could escape from inside the mattress if a cover is damaged or handled incorrectly.

2. “Chemical-free”

We will not make this promise.

It sounds comforting.

It does not withstand much examination.

The useful conversation is about which materials and which standards, not pretending a manufactured sleep product contains no chemistry.

3. “Zero off-gassing” as an absolute

A newly manufactured product may have an odour from foam, fabric, adhesive, packaging or simply being sealed for shipping.

A smell does not automatically prove harmful exposure, and no noticeable smell does not automatically establish a cleaner product either. Haven's own current guidance makes this distinction.

For foam, we would rather point to a defined emissions standard.

CertiPUR-US® says low VOC, with a stated emissions criterion.

Not magical zero.

4. A natural ingredient used to describe the entire mattress

A mattress can contain Talalay latex and still contain steel, polyurethane foam, textiles, adhesives and other components.

That is normal.

What we refuse is the shortcut where one natural component is allowed to make the entire mattress sound like it grew in a forest.

5. Certifications applied beyond their scope

CertiPUR-US® does not certify latex.

We will not imply that it does.

The same principle should apply to any standard.

Certification is useful precisely because somebody defined its boundaries.

6. Ingredients that exist primarily to make the specification longer

This one is subjective.

But it may be the most important.

When a new material crosses the design table, we ask:

What gets better?

If the answer is mainly:

“The product page sounds more expensive,”

that is not enough.


What about fire barriers, fiberglass and mattress safety?

This deserves more than a bullet.

A mattress has to satisfy fire-safety requirements.

Health Canada's current industry guidance explains the federal flammability requirements applying to mattresses sold in Canada, including prescribed testing of the completed mattress assembly.

That means there is a real engineering problem to solve.

The responsible discussion is not:

fire barrier = bad.

Nor is it:

natural = fireproof.

It is:

How does this mattress satisfy the applicable safety requirement, and what construction is being used to do it?

Fiberglass became a consumer concern because some mattress constructions have used glass fibres within barrier systems.

For House of Haven, the answer is simple enough to state:

we do not want fiberglass to be part of the Haven mattress ownership experience. Haven's published material guidance has explicitly described its mattress construction as fiberglass-free.

And we do not want shoppers frightened of asking the question.

Ask every mattress company:

Does this mattress contain fiberglass?

What is the fire-barrier approach?

Can the cover be opened or removed?

Are there special handling instructions?

Those are reasonable product questions.

They are far more useful than looking for a green leaf icon.


Is plant-based foam actually natural foam?

No — and this distinction matters too.

Replacing a portion of conventional petrochemical feedstock with plant-derived inputs can change the formulation of a polyurethane foam.

It does not transform polyurethane foam into latex.

And it does not make the finished material equivalent to a block of plant matter.

Haven currently describes NaturFoam™ as an open-cell, plant-based foam and separately identifies Talalay latex as a different comfort material.

We think those categories should remain separate.

Plant-based polyurethane foam is still polyurethane foam.

That is not a confession.

It is useful material transparency.

The question then becomes whether the foam has the properties we want and meets the standards we require.

That is where CertiPUR-US® belongs.

Not as a natural-material badge.

As a polyurethane-foam standard.


Why don't we insist everything be natural?

Because that would make the material philosophy simpler to market and less useful to design.

Steel is not natural in the way latex sap is natural.

Yet steel pocket coils can be an excellent support material.

A performance textile may include synthetic fibres and still solve moisture, durability or stretch requirements extremely well.

A carefully specified polyurethane transition foam may perform a job that we would not ask latex to perform in exactly the same way.

The goal is not:

maximize the number of materials that sound natural.

The goal is:

use the most considered material for each job, then describe it accurately.

This is where a mattress materials guide becomes much more useful than a purity score.

The House material test

What does that standard cover? Exact scope — not a broader interpretation

Would we still use it if its marketing name disappeared? Ideally, yes

That final question is one of our favourites.

If the trademark disappeared tomorrow, would the material still deserve to be inside the bed?

If yes, it has probably earned its place.


How should Canadians actually compare mattress materials?

If you are searching for a non-toxic mattress in Canada, we would translate that search into better questions before buying.

1. What are the actual comfort materials?

Latex?

Polyurethane foam?

Memory foam?

Microcoils?

Do not settle for proprietary names alone.

2. Which components are certified?

Ask for scope.

“CertiPUR-US mattress” is less precise than:

“The flexible polyurethane foam in this mattress is CertiPUR-US® certified.”

The certification program itself stresses that it certifies foam, not mattresses or companies.

3. What does “low VOC” mean here?

Look for the actual standard or limit.

CertiPUR-US® publishes a VOC-emissions criterion below 0.5 ppm for its certified foam.

4. Does it contain fiberglass?

Ask directly.

A clear yes or no is more useful than an entire sustainability paragraph.

5. What is the fire-barrier approach?

The mattress still has to comply with Canadian safety requirements.

6. Does “natural” refer to one component or the whole mattress?

Read carefully.

7. What does the cover actually contain?

Especially if it is marketed as bamboo, eucalyptus or another plant-derived textile.

8. Can the company tell you what it refuses to use?

This may be the information-gain question.

A material philosophy is easier to trust when it has boundaries.

Anyone can publish a list of what they put in.

The more revealing list may be what they decided not to put in — and why.


The House Standard is not a purity contest

We are not interested in making someone's bedroom more anxious.

There is enough mattress content online capable of doing that already.

House of Haven's approach is quieter.

Use natural Talalay where latex earns its place.

Use carefully specified polyurethane foam where foam has a useful job.

Apply CertiPUR-US® accurately to the foam it actually certifies.

Use steel because sometimes a spring is a very good answer.

Avoid fiberglass.

Do not call processed materials something they are not.

Do not make health promises because a material name sounds wholesome.

Do not use “chemical-free” when specific language is available.

And do not put another ingredient into a mattress merely because marketing could invent a good paragraph about it.

That is what clean mattress materials mean inside the House.

Not purity.

Discipline.
