Murphy Bed Mattress Guide: What Works in a Wall Bed (And What Fails Over Time)

The best Murphy bed mattress in Canada is not simply a thinner version of your favorite bedroom mattress. A wall bed adds three constraints most conventional beds do not: maximum mattress thickness, mattress weight and long periods stored vertically. Some current wall-bed systems accept Queen mattresses around 8–12″ thick and 60–90 lb, while others have different limits. The wall-bed manufacturer’s specification always comes first.

What makes a Murphy bed mattress different from a regular mattress?

The sleeper does not change.

The bed does.

That distinction matters.

When a conventional mattress goes onto a platform, foundation or slatted frame, it generally spends almost all of its life lying horizontally.

A Murphy bed mattress has another job.

Sleep on it horizontally.

Then lift it.

Store it vertically.

Lower it again.

Repeat.

That means the mattress has to coexist with a piece of moving furniture.

The wall-bed mechanism now cares about specifications your normal platform bed may barely notice.

Thickness

Can the mattress physically fit inside the cabinet when closed?

Weight

Has the lift mechanism been balanced around a particular mattress-weight range?

Retention

Will the mattress remain positioned correctly when stored upright?

Construction

Are the internal components appropriate for repeated vertical storage?

Clearance

Will bedding and mattress compress sufficiently for the cabinet to close correctly?

These are not small details.

A current Bestar Queen Murphy bed, for example, specifies mattresses 8–12″ thick, 60–90 lb and 60 × 80″, while one of its horizontal wall beds narrows the recommendation to 8–10″ and 35–70 lb.

BredaBeds provides another example of why there is no universal rule: one current mechanism accepts mattresses up to 13″ and 110 lb, but the company still recommends staying under 11″ for better headboard geometry and cabinet fit.

The wall-bed mechanism writes the mattress brief.

Do not buy the mattress first and hope the cabinet negotiates with it later.


How thick should a mattress be for a Murphy bed?

Usually:

less thick than people initially want.

But the actual number depends entirely on the wall bed.

Current Murphy-bed manufacturers illustrate the range well.

Bestar commonly allows 8–12″ for several vertical Queen models.

Its horizontal models recommend 8–10″ and specifically caution that extra-thick mattresses may prevent the wall bed from closing correctly.

Lori Beds describes roughly 10–12″ as a common practical range for many Murphy beds because the cabinet has finite depth once the mattress is raised.

BredaBeds accepts up to 13″ on one current model but recommends staying under 11″ for better wall-to-mattress geometry.

So a useful mattress height guide for Murphy beds looks more like this:

Those are design guidelines, not substitute specifications.

Your wall-bed manual wins every argument.

Why isn't thicker automatically better?

Because thickness is only useful when the mattress can actually use it.

An 8″ mattress can contain:

surface comfort;

transition;

and deeper support.

That is enough to make a complete adult sleep surface.

A 14″ mattress gives the designer more room for:

deep pillowtops;

multiple transition layers;

microcoils;

and other luxury architecture.

Wonderful.

On the right bed.

But a Murphy bed introduces a hard physical constraint:

the mattress eventually has to disappear into a wall.

That changes the definition of the best mattress profile.

In a primary bedroom, extra height may be luxury.

In a wall bed, extra height can become interference.


Why does mattress weight matter in a wall bed?

Because the mattress becomes part of the mechanism.

This is probably the biggest difference between shopping for a conventional mattress and shopping for a wall-bed mattress.

When you place a mattress on a fixed platform, adding 25 pounds usually changes very little about how the furniture operates.

The platform does not have to lift it every morning.

A Murphy bed does.

Most wall beds use some form of:

springs;

pistons;

or another counterbalanced lifting system.

That mechanism is designed around a range of loads.

Too heavy

The bed can become harder to raise.

The mechanism may not close as intended.

The bed can feel unnecessarily heavy during operation.

Too light

A counterbalanced bed can behave incorrectly in the other direction.

Wilding Wallbeds, for example, says its Queen mechanisms are engineered around mattresses approximately 50–100 lb and specifically warns that too light a mattress may affect the bed staying open, while an overly heavy mattress can make opening and closing difficult.

Bestar specifies 60–90 lb for several current Queen vertical Murphy beds.

BredaBeds allows up to 110 lb on one current model.

Again:

there is no universal Murphy-bed weight.

Thickness and weight are separate specifications

This is easy to miss.

Imagine two 10″ Queen mattresses.

One is a relatively light all-foam design.

The other contains:

dense latex;

multiple foam layers;

microcoils;

a substantial coil system;

and heavy quilting.

Both say 10″ on the product page.

They can weigh very differently.

So never ask only:

“Will a 10-inch mattress fit?”

Ask:

“Will this exact mattress fit — and is its weight within the mechanism's operating range?”

That is the real question.


What mattress construction works best when stored vertically?

The safest answer is:

one specifically approved for the wall bed and warranted for the application.

That is less exciting than declaring foam or springs the universal winner.

It is also more useful.

A conventional mattress spends its life supported from underneath in roughly the same orientation.

A wall-bed mattress may spend much of the day standing on its end.

Some wall-bed manufacturers therefore specifically warn that internal mattress layers need to remain secured rather than shifting while vertical. Wilding, for example, notes the importance of securely attached layers for mattresses used in its wall beds and advises shoppers to confirm that the mattress is appropriate for upright storage.

That should not be turned into:

“Pocket coils cannot go into Murphy beds.”

Current Bestar guidance explicitly says both memory-foam and high-quality hybrid mattresses can work in its wall beds when they meet the applicable height and weight specifications.

The important point is broader.

A wall-bed mattress has to remain internally organized.

That means we would look for:

properly bonded or secured internal layers;

a stable perimeter;

materials capable of handling repeated orientation changes;

a cover that retains the construction cleanly;

and confirmation that the mattress manufacturer permits wall-bed use.

Why all foam can be attractive

A relatively compact all-foam mattress can offer several practical advantages.

Lower profile.

Potentially manageable weight.

No need for an especially tall coil system.

A consistent structure from edge to edge.

And enough flexibility for the wall-bed platform.

What fails over time in a poorly matched wall-bed mattress?

Usually not because somebody chose the wrong thread count.

The problems are more structural.

The mattress is too thick

At first, you can still force the wall bed closed.

So you do.

Again.

And again.

The mattress, bedding, straps and cabinet are now competing for the same limited space.

A specification mismatch does not become better through persistence.

The mattress is too heavy

The bed operated beautifully with the old mattress.

Then someone “upgraded” to a taller, heavier luxury mattress.

Now the mechanism feels wrong.

That is not necessarily a defective wall bed.

It may simply no longer be balanced around the load it was designed to carry. Wall-bed manufacturers explicitly publish weight limits for this reason.

The construction was never intended to stand upright

A mattress can perform wonderfully on a platform while still being a questionable choice for prolonged vertical storage.

If internal layers are not sufficiently secured for that orientation, gravity gets thousands of hours to participate in the mattress design.

Some wall-bed manufacturers specifically flag this as a durability consideration.

The mattress slides

Murphy beds commonly use straps or other retention systems to keep the mattress properly positioned when stored.

Bestar includes a mattress strap on current vertical models, while BredaBeds likewise uses a retention strap in its design.

The strap should not be treated as decorative.

The owner keeps adding comfort on top

This one happens gradually.

Mattress feels too firm.

Add a 2″ topper.

Then a padded protector.

Then thick bedding.

The original 9″ wall-bed mattress is now behaving more like an 11–12″ sleep stack when you try to close the cabinet.

The wall bed does not care that only nine of those inches technically came from the mattress company.

It cares about total occupied space.

That gives us an important Murphy-bed rule:

Measure the sleep stack you actually intend to close into the cabinet — not only the mattress label.


Why can a thick pillowtop fail in a Murphy bed?

Because a pillow top height that is useful in a primary bedroom can become dead weight and dead space inside a wall bed.

This is not an argument against pillowtops.

That tells us something important.

Luxury is contextual.

A 16″ pillowtop can be exactly right in a large primary bedroom.

An 8″ mattress can be more intelligently designed for a wall bed.

The thinner mattress is not therefore:

lesser.

It is more appropriate to the assignment.

Can a Murphy bed be comfortable enough for everyday sleep?

Absolutely — if the complete wall bed is designed for it.

A Murphy bed is not automatically a guest bed.

The important distinction is between:

What does an everyday wall-bed mattress actually need?

Enough comfort material to manage pressure.

A feel appropriate to the person using it.

Adequate edge stability for the design.

A profile compatible with the cabinet.

And durability appropriate to nightly use.

That is the complete brief.

What it does not necessarily need

A 4″ pillowtop.

Six different comfort foams.

A second spring system.

A 16″ finished profile.

Or every feature currently associated with a luxury primary-bedroom mattress.

The mattress has a finite thickness budget.

So spend those inches carefully.

In a wall bed, we would add:

Every inch also has to fit.


Is 8″ enough for an adult Murphy-bed mattress?

It can be.

Thickness alone does not determine whether the mattress is supportive or comfortable.

An 8″ mattress has less vertical room than a 14″ one.

That simply means the architecture has to be more disciplined.

You cannot casually spend:

three inches on quilting;

three more on decorative pillowtop;

another two on microcoils;

and then discover that you have barely started building the support system.

A lower-profile mattress forces priorities.

Surface comfort.

Transition.

Support.

Done.

What about a 10″ mattress?

Ten inches may be one of the easiest profiles to integrate into many wall-bed systems.

It remains within the compatibility range published for many current vertical Murphy beds, while giving the mattress designer two additional inches compared with a highly constrained 8″ design.

Those inches can be used for:

more contour;

a deeper transition;

or a more substantial support structure.

But the weight still needs checking.

This is where someone can make an understandable mistake.

They read:

“Maximum mattress thickness: 12″.”

They buy a very substantial 11″ latex hybrid.

It fits the cabinet.

But it exceeds the mechanism's intended mattress weight.

Thickness passed.

Weight failed.

The wall bed requires both answers.


What about a 12″ mattress?

Twelve inches is the upper end of the published range for many wall beds.

Not all.

Bestar lists 8–12″ for several current vertical Queen models.

Lori Beds similarly describes 10–12″ as common Murphy-bed territory.

But another wall bed may recommend 10″ maximum.

A horizontal mechanism may have a different requirement.

And a 12″ mattress may be too heavy even if the cabinet technically has enough depth.

So at twelve inches, we would stop thinking:

“Standard mattress.”

And start thinking:

“mechanism-specific mattress.”

That is the safer buying mindset.


The Murphy-bed fit test we would actually use

This is the information-gain tool for the article.

Before shopping for the mattress, open the wall-bed manual.

You need five numbers.

1. Mattress width

Queen is normally approximately 60″ wide.

Full/Double approximately 54″.

But use the mechanism specification rather than memory.

2. Mattress length

Again, match the wall bed.

Not merely the size name.

3. Maximum mattress thickness

This determines the largest profile the closed cabinet was designed to accommodate.

4. Mattress weight range

Not only maximum weight.

If the bed uses a counterbalanced system, the lower end may matter too.

5. Available retention and clearance

Straps.

Headboard.

Bedding.

Cabinet face.

All need space.

Then evaluate the mattress.

“Probably” is not a specification.


How do you choose the right Murphy bed mattress in Canada?

Start with the wall bed.

Not the mattress advertisement.

Step 1: Identify the exact mechanism

Brand.

Model.

Vertical or horizontal.

Size.

If you already own the wall bed, find the manual.

If you are still buying both, choose them together.

Step 2: Record the permitted thickness

Do not assume 10″, 11″ or 12″ because another brand accepts it.

Current wall-bed manufacturers publish materially different limits.

Step 3: Record the required mattress weight

This is just as important as profile.

Step 4: Confirm vertical-storage compatibility

Ask the mattress company explicitly:

“Is this mattress designed and warranted for use in a Murphy bed where it will be stored vertically?”

Step 5: Decide how the bed will actually be used

Occasional guest bed?

Several weekends per month?

Every night?

The mattress brief should reflect that.

Step 6: Choose comfort within the available profile

Do not begin by saying:

“I need a 14″ luxury mattress.”

Begin with:

“I have 9″ available. How do I create the best mattress possible inside those nine inches?”
