What does pocket coil count actually mean?
At its simplest, coil count tells you how many springs are inside a mattress.
That sounds straightforward.
It is not.
A mattress manufacturer can use larger coils.
Smaller coils.
Taller coils.
Short micro coils.
Different wire diameters.
Multiple spring layers.
Nested coils.
Zoned coils.
Reinforced perimeter coils.
All of those decisions can change the total number dramatically.

But it does not contain three times the primary support system of the first mattress.
It contains two spring systems doing different jobs.
That may be excellent engineering.
In fact, micro coil technology is specifically designed to allow smaller pocket springs to function as responsive comfort layers higher in a mattress. Spring manufacturer Spinks describes micro coils as low-height pocket springs intended for comfort, contouring and breathability rather than simply replicating a full-height support core.
The important distinction is:
coil count tells you quantity. Architecture tells you purpose.
So when we see 3,000+ coils, our next question is not:
“Is that enough?”
It is:
“Where are they, and what are they doing?”
Why do smaller pocket coils change how a mattress responds?
Picture a floor supported by four large springs.
Now picture the same area supported by 100 smaller springs.
The second system has more individual points where the surface can respond to load.
Mattress spring engineering works on a related principle.
Because each spring in a true pocket system sits inside its own fabric pocket, it has greater ability to respond locally to pressure rather than behaving exactly like every spring beside it. AGRO describes this characteristic as individual flexibility or point elasticity, and notes that coil count can influence how finely the spring system adapts to applied body weight.
That does not mean the smallest possible spring is always better.
Smaller springs may require different wire.
Different height.
Different turns.
Different construction.
Everything changes together.
But higher spring density can give a designer more points through which to tune how the mattress responds.
Think of pixels.
A television with more pixels can reproduce finer detail.

Coils are similar.
More points can create more resolution. They do not guarantee better execution.
What are zoned pocket coils supposed to do?
A person is not a rectangular load.
Your body does not apply exactly the same force to every square inch of the mattress.
Shoulders.
Torso.
Pelvis.
Legs.
They load the bed differently.

What zoning does and does not mean
Zoning does not mean a mattress is treating back pain.
It does not mean every person's hips land at exactly the same point.
And seven zones are not automatically superior to three.
A properly designed zoned system is simply intended to vary how different regions of the mattress respond.
That is why the useful question is not:
“How many zones does it have?”
It is:
“What is changing between those zones?”
That answer tells you far more.
What is the difference between support coils and micro coils?
This distinction explains many of today's very high coil counts.
Support coils

That last line matters.
If a mattress advertises 3,000+ pocket coils, we think the shopper deserves to know whether that number describes:
one support unit;
two coil layers;
micro coils plus base coils;
or several different spring systems added together.
There is nothing wrong with adding them together.
There is something unhelpful about not explaining the total.
When is a high coil count mostly marketing?
When the number arrives without context.
This is where honesty becomes more useful than a specification race.
When the mattress size is missing
A King has more surface area than a Queen.
A Queen has more than a Twin.
So a raw coil count without the mattress size used to calculate it is incomplete.
If Brand A quotes its King coil count and Brand B quotes its Queen, you are not comparing equivalent products.
When micro coils are silently added to base coils
Again, there is nothing wrong with counting both.
But shoppers should understand that the systems are performing different jobs.
When wire gauge is never mentioned
Two coils of identical dimensions can behave differently if they use different wire.

But once again, count is not the whole answer.
Comfort layers affect motion.
Coil bonding affects motion.
Spring diameter affects motion.
The bed frame affects what you feel.
And a highly responsive mattress may deliberately retain some bounce.
So:
more coils can mean more response points.
It does not automatically mean:
less motion than every mattress with fewer coils.
For couples, the better question is whether movement stays sufficiently local without making the mattress feel dull or disconnected.
That balance is part of the design.
Do 3,000 coils make a mattress more supportive?
They can contribute to a sophisticated support and comfort system.
But 3,000 is not a support rating.
A well-designed 1,200-coil mattress may be better suited to a particular sleeper than a poorly resolved 3,000-coil mattress.
The deeper coil architecture should be designed to support the sleeper.
The comfort system should create the desired surface experience.
And if microcoils are included, they should have a defined role rather than simply existing to make the specification larger.

Then ask:
What mattress size is the stated coil count based on?
Queen is the most useful common benchmark.
If the company does not specify, ask.
Is it one coil unit or several?
Find out how many coils are in the support core and how many are microcoils or comfort springs.
Are the coils individually pocketed?
That tells you more about how independently the springs may respond.
Is the mattress zoned?
If yes, ask what actually changes between the zones.
What does the perimeter use?
Some mattresses use firmer coils around the outside.
Others use foam rails.
Either approach can work.
The meaningful question is how the perimeter has been engineered.
What are the comfort materials above the coils?
You do not sleep directly on the support core.
Latex, foam, quilting and micro coils can dramatically change how the underlying spring system feels.
Does the manufacturer explain the architecture?
This may be the most useful filter of all.
A company proud of a large coil count should be equally willing to explain where those coils are located and why they are there.

Do not write:
