Haven Sleep Co. Celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

What is National Indigenous Peoples Day?

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This day is to celebrate the amazing contributions and diverse culture of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. National Indigenous Peoples Day was first celebrated in 1996 and we have been celebrating ever since! Many Indigenous peoples have been celebrating this day for countless years during the summer solstice. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and brings together different communities to celebrate their culture and heritage. As Indigenous peoples and Canadians strive for reconciliation, it is important to take time during this day and learn from Indigenous peoples across Canada.

How to Celebrate

The government of Canada celebrates and supports National Indigenous Peoples day by providing resources for events and funding for communities. But how can you celebrate the amazing culture and heritage of Indigenous peoples?

1) Watch a powwow gathering: Attending a powwow is a great way to immerse yourself in the Indigenous culture and learn. It is important to be respectful and enjoy the gathering!

2) Learn some words in an Indigenous language: Indigenous peoples are pushing for Canada to recognize Indigenous languages as official languages of Canada. During this time you can celebrate the amazing culture of the Indigenous peoples by learning some words and helping to revitalize Indigenous languages.

3) Support Local Indigenous owned Businesses: Supporting local Indigenous businesses is extremely important especially during the time of Covid. Consider shopping with them and sharing in their culture!

4) Acknowledged the land you live on: Learn about the area you live on and the peoples who lived on it before you. Indigenous peoples lived all over Canada before colonization. Use education to learn and be open to hearing others stories who came before.
